Best Time to Visit Tanzania for Wildlife (Month-by-Month Guide)

Tanzania's Two Seasons

Tanzania essentially has two seasons that matter for safari planning: dry season (June–October) and wet season (November–May, with two distinct rainy periods). Both have their merits, and neither is truly "bad" for wildlife.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January & February — Calving Season

Verdict: Excellent (and underrated) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Serengeti's southern region is transformed into a nursery. Over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in a 3-week window — an extraordinary spectacle of life. Predators gorge themselves, and sightings of cheetah, lion, and leopard with kills are frequent. Costs are typically 20–30% lower than peak season. Weather is warm and partly sunny. This is one of Tanzania's most underrated times to visit.

March, April & May — Long Rains

Verdict: For the adventurous (and budget-conscious) ⭐⭐⭐

The long rains bring lush, green landscapes — beautiful for photography. Many camps and lodges close or discount heavily. Roads become challenging. Some parks (particularly Nyerere) may be inaccessible. Bird watching is exceptional — migratory birds arrive and residents breed. Not recommended for first-timers, but experienced travellers who don't mind the odd shower can find extraordinary value and virtually empty parks.

June — Dry Season Begins

Verdict: Very Good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Vegetation starts to thin. Animals move north in the Serengeti. The wildebeest start amassing near the Grumeti River for the first crossings. Excellent general game viewing. Prices rising. A great shoulder-month before peak season crowds arrive.

July & August — Peak Season

Verdict: Outstanding ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Mara River crossings are in full swing. This is the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth — thousands of wildebeest plunging into crocodile-infested waters. The northern Serengeti near Lamai and Kogatende is the best place to witness this. Camps are fully booked and at their most expensive. Book 6–12 months in advance. Worth every penny.

September & October — Still Excellent

Verdict: Outstanding ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Crossings continue into September. By October the wildebeest are heading south again. The southern Serengeti starts filling up. Ngorongoro and Tarangire are superb — large elephant herds concentrate around the Tarangire River for some of the best elephant viewing anywhere in Africa. Slightly fewer tourists than July–August.

November & December — Short Rains

Verdict: Good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Showers are typically brief and unpredictable. The landscape greens up. Wildebeest are returning south. Bird watching peaks. Prices drop from their August highs. December in particular is excellent — Christmas holidays aside, it's an excellent time that's overlooked. Zanzibar is particularly beautiful December–January.

Best Time by Park

  • Serengeti: Year-round excellent, best July–September (north) or January–February (south)
  • Ngorongoro: Year-round (animals can't leave the crater). February–March for lush scenery, July–October for drier, easier game viewing
  • Tarangire: June–October when elephants crowd the river. The rest of the year is still good but less concentrated
  • Ruaha: June–October best. Southern Circuit parks are very hot and wet November–April
  • Zanzibar: June–October best. January–February also excellent
  • Kilimanjaro: January–February and June–October offer the clearest skies and best summit conditions
